Other Hazards

Droughts, flood, landslides and storms can be considered as the hazards more frequently experienced in Sri Lanka. In addition, other localized hazards experienced in Sri Lanka include lightning strikes, epidemics, effects of environmental pollution etc. Minor earth tremors (sometimes reservoir induced) are also experienced but no significant damages have been reported. More recently, the country’s vulnerability to low frequency and extremely high impact events was amply demonstrated by the Asian Tsunami of 26th December 2004 which resulted in almost over 35, 000 deaths. Lightning strikes, mostly in the hilly areas of the central region and also in other areas of the island during the inter-monsoon periods result in average casualty rate of about 80 per year.
